On my first night in Costa Rica, I slept very well.  It gets light very early (before 6 am)!
view of volcanoThis was the view of the volcano when I got up on Tuesday (June 18)--all clouded over.
Here's what the Hotel La Fortuna breakfast area looks like when empty.breakfast area
breakfast plate breakfast plate
I had read that breakfast would be a fruit plate, and it was.  First, coffee was served (which I passed on).  Next came the fruit plate (pineapple, watermelon, and banana on this day; it had different fruits on other days) and glass of orange juice.  Finally there was a hot plate: buttered white toast with red jelly (good and sweet) and scrambled eggs.  On this first day, there was also ham/bacon (but that didn't appear on the other days).  I was very impressed!
earthquake signIn every hotel, there's a sign about what to do in case of fire.
This hotel had what to do in case of earthquake!
bridgesbridges
My tour for Tuesday was the Arenal Hanging Bridges.  It's a mix of fun suspension bridges, metal bridges, and nature trails through the rainforest.
no rings!walkway
It was neat to see the trees with no rings.  No winter = no rings! The trail was paved with these "open waffle weave" bricks.
They were uneven but gave traction in the rain.
I was glad I'd worn my hiking boots!
frog bridge
We saw a rufous motmot through the spotting scope, but the first animal we saw with our eyes was this blue jeans dart frog, with a bright red body and blue legs.
Some of the bridges were non-suspension.
bridgeviper
Crossing the suspension bridges was so fun!  It reminded me of the suspension bridge in San Diego.  They are every little kid's dream. There was an eyelash viper along the trail.  My guide, Oscar (sp.), was able to get this amazing photo using my camera!
lizardWe also got to see this casque-headed lizard.  Oscar set up the spotting scope for us to get a great look, but then he was able to take a photo with my camera through the scope!

Other animals I got to see at the Arenal Hanging Bridges include some sort of yellow-rumped flycatcher, leaf-carrying ants, a wild pig (peccary), orange-billed sparrows, and lots of beautiful butterflies!

(We also heard monkeys but didn't see them.)
view of Arenalview of Arenal
When our guided tour was over, the rain stopped, and we got great views of the Arenal Volcano while we waited for the van to head back to the hotels.
(Like at Denali in Alaska, I just couldn't get enough photos of the volcano!)
bakery
bakery
I walked around La Fortuna and decided on getting lunch at a bakery (Musmanni).
I got a chicken empanada, an apple streudel-type pastry, and an orange Fanta for a little under $5.
I ate my bakery lunch while sitting on a bench in the park/square in the center of La Fortuana.park
orchidsNext to my hotel was this bush of beautiful orchids!
chunky star Tyler on window
On my second night in Costa Rica, I ate at Taco's Serrano again.
This time, I had the Chunky Star combo: a grilled chicken crunchwrap supreme, fried, and another orange Fanta.
As I was sitting and eating, I got to see a lizard crawl all over the restaurant window.
(In my family, we would have called him Tyler, as in Togo or Puerto Rico)
