We followed our map
to where it listed the Goldfish Market, but we didn't know what to
expect. It was the area filled with little shops selling fish and
fish tank supplies. Wow!
It was one of
those places that just makes you happy.

Next we were off
to the Yuen Po St. Bird Garden. Although the fear of bird flu was
still very real, we were cautious and looked carefully. It was
worth it!

Before
leaving the bird garden, we hit the bathroom. More squat toilets!

Hong Kong tourist
signs are wonderful! We left the bird garden and walked to the
flower market, a street filled with plants and flower sellers.

After so much
walking, we took the subway to the Olympic souvenir store, where I
bought a keychain. We then walked to McDonald's for strawberry
milkshakes, 7-11 for bottled water, and made it to the Salisbury YMCA
near the waterfront to meet out tour guide.
Here
is my Olympic souvenir: a blue keychain with one of the Friendlies on
it.
I still have it on my keychain!

We
took the 1:30 pm Land Between tour. Our wonderful guide was
Joseph Li.
First,
we drove along the docks. So many container ships!

Our first stop was
the striking Yuen Yuen Institute, a multi-religion temple. The
buildings were beautiful, but it felt disconcerting to be at a working
temple.

My students won't
be surprised to learn I was born in the year of the DRAGON!
Climbing
back on the bus

Next
stop was the Tai Mo Shan lookout point. (It was foggy, though.) |

The third stop was
Fanling Village, a walled/fortified village with houses inside.

The fourth stop on
the tour was the Luk Keng Road lookout point. Basically this was
as close to the mainland as we could get without a Chinese visa!

The fifth stop on
the tour was Bride's Pool Falls. With more time, it would have
been nice to do some hiking in the area.

The final stop on
the tour was to see the Sam Mun Tsai Fishing Village, a floating
village where fish are bred in submerged cages.

What
a wondeful tour of northern Hong Kong! We finished at about 6 pm. |
Our
guide pointed out that many cars have two license plates, one for Hong
Kong and one for the mainland.

After a long day,
we couldn't decide on where to eat. We wanted a break from
McDonald's, and we're not very adventurous, so we wandered around the
Ocean Terminal (cruise ship terminal mall) and ended up at California
Pizza Kitchen. We ended up with a beautiful harbor-view table!

I
had the barbeque chicken pizza and a Sprite. EHG had the roasten
garlic chicken pizza and a Diet Coke ("Coke Light"). The prices
were high (240 HKD or $31 for the whole meal), but it was our splurge
meal of the trip. What a view!! Too bad we were here too
early to see the 8 pm light show, but then, we probably wouldn't have
gotten a table.
After our meal, we
dropped our bags in the room and walked the Temple Street Night Market
(crowded but fun, very dollar store-like).

On to the next pictures!
