Day 5: From Dalton, Georgia, to Americus, Georgia
Thursday, June 23, 2011
256.8 miles

I got out the door at 9:11 am.

Gas was $3.359/gal in Dalton, Georgia.

My main stop for the day was Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, north of Atlanta.

Kennesaw Mountain visitor centerI started my visit at the Kennesaw Mountain Visitor Center.

They have a WONDERFUL Civil War artifact exhibit/museum and a nice film, all free.  My favorite was a recruiting poster in German.

It was also impressive to see flags, silk sashes. a moneybelt(!), and so many uniforms identified with the names of the wearers.  Of the Civil War-era museums I've visited, this one at Kennesaw Mountain is my favorite!
After the visitor center, I followed the self-guided auto tour.

The first stop was Kennesaw Mountain.

Until this stop, I had no idea that earthworks were an important part of the Civil War.  (I had always previously associated them with Native American civilizations and World War I.)

That the earthworks have lasted nearly 150 yeas is impressive!

(A kind mom and her little boy took this picture of me, and then I took their picture.)

Kolb farmThere are only four stops on the Kennesaw Mountain battlefield self-guiding auto tout.

The final stop was Kolb's Farm.

I had considered also visiting Stone Mountain, but having so much fun at Kennesaw Mountain
and finding out Stone Mountain has a  $10 parking fee, I passed and drove straight through Atlanta on I-75.

After making it through Atlanta, I stopped at the Stockbridge, Georgia, Golden Corral for lunch at 2:20 pm.

I decided to drive to Andersonville, Georgia, only to make it there at 5:30 pm (when they close at 5:00 pm).
Because of that, I drove to on Americus and found a hotel room at the Baymont Inn Americus for $53.96 + tax.
While the first room I was assigned was being repaired, the second room was fine.

The non-smoking, first-floor room had two double beds, great air-conditioning, good cable TV, good wifi, a reasonable included breakfast, and a friendly front desk staff.

Gas was $3.389/gal in Americus, Georgia.

I wanted to get a good night's sleep and plan out my time in Orlando, so I got a Subway sandwich, brownies, and orange juice
at the Super Walmart down the street, came back to my room, and booked my Harry Potter tickets and Orlando hotel online.
