Chock-full of Memories
Oslo had so many things to see and do!

After eating our amazing breakfast, we checked out and caught the 8:30 train from Stockholm to Oslo (only $13 each by buying online in advance!).
The train ride was six hours (with pretty scenery that reminded us of Michigan's Upper Peninsula), and we arrived in Oslo at 2:30 pm.

to P hotel
Off the train, we walked to our hotel, checked in, and took a nap.
P hotelP hotel
We stayed at the P Hotel, just down a street from the train station (very centrally located).  We were in Room 520.  Price was $125 a night, including a bagged breakfast.
The room was very basic with some issues (had two doors and the deadbolt didn't work), but they gave us an electric fan to use.
The TV had movies on each night either in English or subtitled.  There was a computer with free Internet access on the second floor, too.
roomroom
The ensuite bathroom was clean.
palacewalk up
After our nap, we went out walking.
Our first stop ended up being the Royal Palace.
It was a walk up from near the train station!
parade parade
We were there about 5 pm and got to see these guards/soldiers.  Was it a changing of the guard?
Akershus Akershus
The best views of the Oslo waterfront are from Akershus fortress, a combination fort and park.
Akershus park
Much of the park was walkways and military buildings. We could even see Holmenkollen Ski Jump!
panorama
Here's a great panorama of the Oslo harbor from an Akershus overlook!
breakfast
The next morning, we got up at 7:30 am and ate our bagged breakfast (ham and cheese baguette sandwich, pear, and apple juice juiebox).
ferry
We bought a 24-hour transit pass for $12 each and caught the 9:45 am ferry to Bygdøy to visit the Kon-Tiki Museum and Viking Ship Museum.
kontiki kontiki
Our first museum was the best: the Kon-Tiki Museum. My mother read Thor Heyerdahl's book and was excited to see the actual Kon-Tiki.
kontiki
Amazing to think about floating across the Pacific Ocean on this small raft!
panorama
Here's a better panorama of the main exhibit room.
Eastern island
An Easter Island moai bid us farewell.
viking viking
Next, we walked to the Viking Ship Museum.
These were burial ships unearthed from burial mounds.
Near several of the ships, there were platforms to climb for an overhead view.
I still can't believe this ships sailed all over, including across the Atlantic Ocean!
vikingViking
The building showed off the ships very well.Oh, what pretty scroll work!
ferry back train stop
We took the ferry back to catch the train to Holmenkollen. We took train line #1 to the Holmenkollen stop.
ski jumpmade it
It was another 15 minutes of uphill walking to get to the Holmenkollen ski jump.We made it!  There it is!
more stairs at top
After an elevator, there were even more stairs!  (It's a long way up!)

The space at the top is tight, but the view is amazing!
look down

view
We were able to look down at the actual ramp and the
pool at the bottom.  (No, we didn't give it a try.  Next time!)

We could see so much of the Oslo area!
frogner

park
We took the #1 train back to Majorstuen and then caught the #12 tram to Frogner Park.

The park is filled with sculptures by Gustav Vigeland.
obelish

obelisk
The centerpiece of the park is an obelisk.

The obelisk is composed of 121 carved figures.
fountain

rose
One of the earliest works in the park was this fountain.

We also enjoyed the park's rose garden.  This gorgeous rose is called Fellowship.
Something really cool: We took tram #12 from the park back to the train station.  Tram #12 passes through a fountain!!
