My First Trip to New York City

August 6-9, 2004

OK, so I've been to Africa, traveled alone around Europe, and even cruised in Alaska, but I'd always been AFRAID to go to New York City.
My friend Lois convinced me not to be afraid and to tackle this quintessential American city.
We had a blast and I look forward to my next trip there!

Our first stop was Columbia University.  We ate at the great little Italian restaurant (on the left) but I saw the "Tom's Restaurant" sign and had to get a picture.  (Is it the one from Seinfeld?)

We, of course, went to the top of the Empire State Building.  Here is a view of my favorite building, though: the Chrysler Building.  It is unbelievably gorgeous!

One more picture with me and my building : )

We spent an hour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (not nearly enough time).  My favorite work was this showpiece L.C. Tiffany fountain.  You MUST go see it in person!

My favorite area of New York City was Times Square.

It just had the right mix of gaudiness and people that I like.  Very much like Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls!

We were cheap and took the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.  So how did I get this picture?  OK, it's of another of the boats : )

Here it is, my best photo of the Statue of Liberty.  We took a ferry where the sun was on the way down so the camera lighting wasn't good.  But I still like the picture.

Rockefeller Center was so much smaller than I had always imagined!

OK, I passed on Starbucks in its hometown but ended up getting a Strawberries and Creme drink near the U.N.

Also on the way to the U.N., we just happened to pass the Togo mission.  What a coincidence!

One of our last stops was the United Nations.  We, as usual, passed on the expensive tour and just walked around the free part.
