Our goall was to visit Verona for a few hours on the way to Milan.  It was another leisurely morning!
Breakfast at Hotel Al Santo was very nice, with pastries, fruit, yogurt, sliced meat, sliced cheese, cereal, juice, and coffee.
They also had a pretty outdoor breakfast seating area. After breakfast, we packed up, walked to the historic center of Padua to see the market square, and then walked to the train station.  We caught the 11:40 am regional train to Paris  for 6.90 euros each ($9.75) and got to Verona by 12:40 pm.  We stored our bags at the train station (for 6.90 euros each) and enjoyed walking around.  We started with lunch at McDonald's, then bought tickets to visit Verona's Roman Amphitheater (6 euros [$8.15])..
It somewhat reminded me of visiting the amphitheater in Nimes, France.
We climbed to the top . . .. . . and enjoyed sitting on the seats.  We were sitting where Romans sat!  WOW!
We also got to go on the floor. After the arena visit, we followed the self-guided walk in the Rick Steves Italy 2014 guidebook.  This is the Porta Borsari, the main entrance to Roman Verona.
It was a very hot and sunny day!  We braved the mass of tour groups to visit Piazza Erbe (where we did our souvenir shopping for the trip), the "House of Juliet" courtyard, and the Ponte Pietra bridge.  On the way back to the train station, we stopped again at McDonald's for the best deal in Italy: 1 euro strawberry milkshakes ($1.40, a better price than in the US).  Yum!
We picked up our bags at the station, caught the 6:40 pm train from Verona to Milan (for 11.65 euros [$16.39]), got to Milan at 8:30 pm, and made our way to our nearby hotel.  It was a very full day!
