Buses, Restaurants, and Souvenirs
A day at the Jade Market, Stanley, and Aberdeen

It was our last day in Hong Kong, so we took it easy.

Jade Market

Jade Market
Our first stop on our last day was the Jade Market, a covered market filled with jewelry stalls.

Its looks on the outside weren't spectacular, but inside, it was beautiful.  We got to see many of the merchants setting up, too, as we arrived fairly early (by Hong Kong standards).

My second souvenir in Hong Kong was this $8 (US) multicolored pearl necklace.
I just love it!
Stanley

Next, we took the bus to Stanley to visit the famous Stanley Market.  We weren't impressed with the market, but the waterfront was enjoyable.

There were exposed rocks to walk on . . .

. . . and beautiful flowers with spectacular butterflies!

Here I am at the covered pier in Stanley.

While it was fun to walk around Stanley, it wasn't quite what we'd expected, so we took the bus to Aberdeen.
Aberdeen

Aberdeen
After Stanley, we arrived at the grittier Aberdeen to make our way to the Jumbo floating restaurant.  We walked a long way and found the free ferry.
Our favorite Chinese Buffet in Ann Arbor (now gone) had two giant pictures on the walls, one of Victoria Harbour and one of the Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant.  It was so fun to see both in person!

We were there at a time when there wasn't a lot of demand for the ferry (between lunch and dinner).

Here you can see that the ferries dock at the floating restaurant.  We got out walked around the restaurant (which is actually several restaurants in one), looked at the menus, didn't want anything, and took the ferry back.  We met an Englishman (originally from Hong Kong) and his family on the ferry back!
McDonald's

McDonald's
After our day out to Stanley and Aberdeen, we got sausage McMuffin with egg value meals for dinner at McDonald's, turned in our Octopus cards (to get the deposit back), got rainbow ice cream cones at another McDonald's (I had raspberry--yum!), and went back to our room.

On our final night, we walked to the Ladies Market and found streets filled with locals.  To end our trips, we got a red bean fried pie at McDonald's (not to our taste) and headed back for our final night at the hotel.
at Hong Kong airport

at Hong Kong airport
On Thursday, March 27, 2008, we caught the 5:45 am bus to the airport, arriving at 6:30 am.  We checked in, changed money, and went to the gate (photo on left).  [This is probably the lightest I've ever packed for an internatioanl trip by plane; I have all of our luggage with me in the photo!]  We made some last-minute phone calls with out phone card and boarded (plane photo on right).
We flew from Hong Kong to Tokyo before changing planes and flying from Tokyo back to Detroit.  The Tokyo Narita airport mascot is about the cutest ever.  There were even stampers of him for kids to get around the airport.  They also had a very informative display of fake designer goods!

Our phone card still worked in Tokyo, so we made some calls, used the bathroom, and walked around a lot before boarding our final flight.

Thank you for looking at pictures from my trip to Hong Kong and Macau.  I hope you enjoyed them!
