Grand Canyon Adventure!

Memorial Day Weekend 2004

For over 10 years in a row, my family and I traveled to Niagara Falls, Ontario for Memorial Day weekend.  While Niagara Falls is still one of my favorite places on earth, it was time for a change.  With less than six weeks until Memorial Day, I decided we were going to the Grand Canyon.  My mother and I flew from Detroit to Phoenix and drove a rental car four hours north to the Grand Canyon.  We had an AMAZING time!  Enjoy the pictures:

I will never forget my first view of the canyon.

We parked at the park headquarters and walked the rim trail.

This is my favorite picture from the trip, from near Mather Point.  The color of the rocks was just breathtaking.

Because I decided on the trip so late, we stayed in nearby Tusayan, Arizona, just a few minutes outside the park entrance.  Note the elevation!

We always have to get the sign picture!

We came unprepared for hiking but did it anyway.  Here we are 37 minutes down the Bright Angel Trail, the highlight of the whole trip.  We bought hats, brought water and salty snacks, but forgot one major item: sunscreen!
[I was a lobster by the end of the day.]

We took the bus system out to Pima Point (where this picture was taken) and then walked to Hermit's Rest.  Look closely and you can see the Colorado River at the center of the picture!

Our last stop was a drive out to Desert View.  The drive seems endless but the views are quite different from those near Grand Canyon Village.  A highlight is the Watchtower (seen here); it was built by the Santa Fe Railroad and offers a great (free) view of the canyon!
