Where Greer Lives
Yade, Kara Region, Togo

This is Greer's house.
It is made of mud walls covered with cement; it has a cement floor with a thatch roof.
She has three rooms: a kitchen/living room, a bedroom, and a guest room/storage room.

After our journey of over 7 hours (we had to stop in Kara before journeying to Yade), the first thing we checked out was Greer's latrine.  The paint job is her original design.   We hadn't been at Greer's long before two of her fellow Peace Corps volunteers, Phynessa and Becky, arrived.  This picture shows Greer working in her kitchen (she built the shelves and made the curtains).  I think she was making up some of the 120+ Kool-Aid packets we brought her!
This is a close-up of Greer's thatch roof.
Because of her roof, she has a lot of insects and such in her house.  This is an example of a flat spider on her wall.  She also has lizards, cockroaches (that fall from the ceiling!), and mice.
A close-up of Greer's gas stove.  She made us biscuits and eggs for our first breakfast.  Notice the ever-present fan.  Although Greer and the Togolese were often cold during our trip, Mother and I were ALWAYS hot.  The fan allowed us to stay in Togo and not leave immediately. No running water?  No problem!  This is how Greer washes her dishes.
Greer's homologue is Samuel (at center), who lives in the house next to her in the same compound.  Greer is holding Pig, a compound dog (named for his curly tail). Another picture of Pig.  The Togolese don't have dogs as pets; many Togolese eat dog.  They don't name the dogs, either, but Greer named Pig and he was constantly trying to come into her house.
No trash pick-up in Togo!
Greer has to burn all her trash.
This is the "kitchen" building next to Greer's house.  She doesn't use it (except for storage).  Puppies had just been born inside it while we were there.
Yes, here I am in the shower, a room next to the latrine where a bucket can be placed.  The cup is used for rising.  Fun!
