Anchorage was definitely not what I expected. One of the highlights was the place I stayed, Donna's Bed and Breakfast. (Here I am standing in front of it). It had a great location (not far from the airport, Dimond Blvd., or a recreational trail; in a quiet neighborhood).  Donna, the owner, was extremely nice.  The cable TV was a bonus and the breakfasts were excellent.  I highly recommend it!
